Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
