Archetype's Exodus: An Exploration for the Hardcore Futurism Fanatic.

For a specific breed of science-fiction enthusiast, the revelation of Exodus stood as the biggest news from a recent gaming awards ceremony. It's worth noting, those very fans could have missed grasped its full significance during the initial showcase.

Exodus, the first project from a recently established studio staffed with veteran talent from a famous RPG developer, was first teased a couple of years prior. At the latest event, the development team provided an early release window of 2027, accompanied by a action-packed trailer. Before this reveal, the studio's leadership elaborated on some of the authentic scientific ideas that serve as the basis for the game's universe: relativistic time effects, genetic alteration, and galactic expansion. These are all inherently dense ideas, which are inherently tough to communicate in a brief, marketing-driven trailer.

“I wish some of those innovative and fresh ideas were featured in the trailer. All I saw was ‘stereotypical man in space,’” wrote one observer. Another quipped, “The vibe I got was ‘we have a well-known space opera RPG at home.’” Feedback in community spaces were equally mixed.

The trailer's focus undoubtedly makes sense from a marketing angle. When striving to stand out during a marathon onslaught of game announcements, what sells better: A team discussing the finer points of theoretical science? Or giant robots blowing up while more giant robots emit plasma from their faces? However, in choosing visual bombast, the developers failed to include the more nuanced details that make Exodus one of the more promising hard sci-fi games coming soon. Let's break it down.

The Celestial Conundrum

Does Exodus feature aliens? Perhaps. That's complicated. Look at that shot near the opening of the trailer, featuring a bipedal figure with ashen skin and technological components integrated into their form. That was certainly an alien, right? In the end hinges on your interpretation regarding one of the game's major philosophical questions: If you applied incremental change reasoning to the human genome, is what remains still a human being?

“We want the Celestials... for a player that isn't spend large amounts of time into studying the backstory, to still comprehend the basic premise that they're evolved humans, understand that they’re an opposing force you have to confront... But also, ultimately, make sure it's fun and that they're impressive and that they function effectively to challenge,” explained the studio's lead executive.

Grasping how these alien-seeming beings aren't technically aliens requires wrestling with vast expanses of both space and temporal progression. Time dilation — the relativistic effect that time moves differently for rapidly traveling objects — is an operative scientific basis of Exodus’ narrative setting. Here are the essentials: Humanity evacuates a depleted Earth in the 23rd century for a far-off corner of the Milky Way. Due to time dilation, some human colonists arrive ages before others. Those early arrivals extensively engineered their DNA and assumed the “Celestial” moniker.

“There’s different levels of evolution. The people who reached the Centauri cluster first... had many thousands of years of evolution into the Celestials... They really see standard humans as sort of unevolved, lesser, not really worthy for the dominant positions of society,” stated the game's narrative director.

Exodus is set roughly 40,000 years in the future. Consider that timeframe — that's effectively all of recorded human history multiplied ten times over. Now think about what humans would look like if they spent ten entire human histories advancing the limits of biological science. You would never recognize the outcome as human. You might even believe you're looking at an alien. The scariest strain of Celestial, known as the Mara-Yama, can take various forms. Some possess talons and claws and stand nine feet tall. Others are covered in exoskeletons. According to supplementary lore, when Mara-Yama travel between stars, their physical forms can degenerate into little more than a mass of tissue attached to a head.

Technology and Lore

Amidst the pyrotechnics, lasers, and battle bears, you might have noticed snippets of otherworldly technology in the trailer. The protagonist, Jun Aslan, operates a shiny machine that produces a purple glow. A spaceship flies into a portal and vanishes at incredible speed. This all seems outside human achievement, the kind of tech ascribed to a highly advanced civilization. Yet, these are further examples of elements that seem alien but are ultimately derived in our species' own evolution.

Beyond the core development team, the Exodus universe is being authored by what the narrative lead called a duo of “renowned authors.” One celebrated author has already published a doorstopper novel set in the universe, with another planned, while another esteemed writer has penned a series of short stories. Bringing such established science-fiction writers into the world years before the game's release has enabled the studio to develop a rich fictional universe as a foundation for the game.

“It was really a collaborative effort. We had set some foundations, and working with him, he would have ideas... and we would work to see how they all fit together... With someone of that caliber, you don't want to handcuff him. You want to give him latitude,” the narrative director said of the collaboration.

One interesting scene shows Jun appearing to shape the ground beneath him, fashioning stone into a temporary bridge. This material, called livestone, reacts to brainwaves from Celestials or augmented enforcers — descendants of later human arrivals who were allowed limited technologies by the Celestials. Since Jun shows this ability, questions are raised about his nature.

“Jun's not exactly a Uranic human... Jun is sort of a modified version, for want of a better term,” clarified the writer, noting that the ability to use Celestial technology is a “important element of the game.”

The vast scale of the Exodus setting — both in physical space and historical time — means there is ample room for various stories to be told, drawing from the same established rules without creating contradiction.

Tales of Time and Loss

Although Exodus has been in development for a couple of years and is still distant, several stories have already been told within its universe. The first major novel examines the connection between a Uranic human and a woman whose ship arrived tens of thousands later than planned, making Celestials utterly alien to her experience. An episode of a television series tells a tragic story about a father chasing his daughter across star systems, with time dilation imparting profound effects on their family; by the time he finds her, she has experienced many years.

The game itself is centered on “Jun’s story,” set on the planet Lidon — a world primarily left by Celestials that has become a bastion. A consuming plague known as “the Rot” has begun destroying everything, including critical life support systems, and Jun must harness his unusual powers to {find a solution|stop
