In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the next season and $17 million for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for winning the MVP award.
• $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• $250K for ranking in the top ten.
• $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and makes him a free agent at the termination of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, breaking the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the title match against the United States, he slugged a game-tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.
