Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in defense or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that contravene the law or our national charter."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message reportedly trigger a angry response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified declaration censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Representatives' Strong Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "Every American must come together and condemn the president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is requesting the death of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The GOP official also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
