Monte Cook along with Keith Baker Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master Academy
Beginning in 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing immersive events where expert DMs lead D&D games in ancient fortresses in the UK and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are especially popular among forever DMs who infrequently find the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often seek advice from experts on topics ranging from improvisation and creating challenges to handling difficult situations at the table.
In response, the coordinators began designing a organized method to answer these inquiries, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The inaugural event is scheduled for the start of 2026 at Oglethorpe University.
“It's possible to view numerous digital guides on any topic and gain significant knowledge, but the concept was that there’s just no substitute an in-person experience together with peers in game mastering, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and your peers who are probably in a similar position and aim to improve their skills,” noted the program's dean.
Course Offerings and Cost Levels
Dungeon Masters can choose from options ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to two thousand five hundred dollars, based on the level of access they desire with the professionals. The base tier includes selection from four classes:
- Foundational Skills: Focuses on the basics of leading a game.
- Campaign Building: Focuses around crafting long-running games.
- Universe Design: Highlights the crafting of environments.
- Career Building: Tailored to dungeon masters who want to learn more about the roleplaying business.
Each course includes two days of classwork split over 48 hours.
“The workshops are created so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can participate in, learn from, and then return to your group the week after and implement in your local game.”
Professional Teachers
The majority of workshops are led by duo of instructors. Setting design is guided by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, both teaching the art of worldbuilding.
Career building includes several experts, such as an author on gaming puzzles, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The additional faculty is intended to deliver focused advice to students with definite objectives.
“Certain participants want to launch their own D&D actual play and present their narratives with the world, several aim to release and write original content,” Carl stated. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at an event like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Is it for everyone?”
Premium Packages
A $1.5K gold tier includes access to a welcome reception, a starter kit, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with one of the faculty. This represents the debut of the program, though the organizers has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between campaigns at their immersive experiences.
“You could almost run an entire weekend just on consultation sessions for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the best use of everybody’s time – I think the coursework and the practical exercises is highly beneficial – but I believe it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”
The twenty-five hundred dollar premium option includes an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for several participants plus a teacher, who will then provide notes and coaching.
“The aim is for the faculty member to evaluate whatever the DM is interested in: Hey I don’t do well with improvisation or I get blocked in certain battle scenarios. May I present a scene for you and obtain advice on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and information on a definite universe that they’ve been building.”
Next Steps
Input from the inaugural session will help determine future Dungeon Master University sessions. Carl said that potential adjustments could include adding more office hours, making it longer to 72 hours, or testing alternative workshop formats.
“I hope that we host such events regularly,” Carl expressed. “I really want to see several DMU sessions in a single year, in various locations, and in various nations. The feedback has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with what we’re seeing and I feel it would be wonderful to be able to conduct this in collaboration with major events.”
