The Contents of the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.
Heads Up: This article details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries this season, the significance of the encounter originates in the live show The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Secret Science
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the entity in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
