The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
