The first delivery in an Ashes contest proves far more rather than merely one ball.
It represents a nerve-wracking two or three seconds of pure drama, where all of the pre-contest talk finally ends.
"To set that tone throughout the entire contest would prove really remarkable," commented English bowler Gus Atkinson after questioned about this possibility this week.
"I know there have been multiple historic first-ball instances during Ashes matches. The possibility to add to tradition seems amazing."
Like the bowler explains, the first delivery has produced several of the truly historic Ashes instances - ones that appeared to set that narrative and at least became convenient to reflect upon afterwards...
Cummins Driving Past the Covers

Zak Crawley had spent the preparation for 2023's Ashes series planning hitting the opening delivery for a boundary - about hoping to "create a message."
Australian captain Pat Cummins approached from the pavilion end when the batsman drilled a shot through the covers amid roaring cheers from the England supporters.
"I've always remained an enormous fan regarding the opening delivery in the Ashes," the opener explained.
"I've been observing it from childhood so I understood several weeks before if if we won the toss it meant an excellent chance to facing it."
"I discussed with Brooky about this while we were playing golf in Scotland - that it would be cool if I could get that first ball for runs and make a statement."
The English didn't won that contest - while Australia dramatically took that first match during last day - yet it was a preview of the way Stokes' team would play aggressively during the summer.
The Opener and English Dismissed Early

That moment in Edgbaston has been among rare opening salvos that went in favor of England, though.
Much more typically they have been telling signs of the Australian dominance that was to come.
On the 2021-22 series, Mitchell Starc dismissed England opener Rory Burns via a half-volley at the Gabba to become the first bowler to take a wicket on the opening delivery in an Ashes series since Australian seamer Ernest McCormick during 1936.
The English build-up was poor and at that point during Australian jubilation the tourists received a hit psychologically.
"My spirit simply fell immediately," said paceman Stuart Broad, who was observing from the dressing room.
"You have prepared toward these matches then immediately, opening delivery, he is dismissed."
The series were gone in eleven more days and the Australians claimed the contest four-nil.

It is additionally unsurprising an Australian skipper who thrived in "psychological warfare" thought proceedings were determined through an identical incident 27 before.
Steve Waugh with the Australians aimed for their fourth Ashes win in a row as batsman Michael Slater began the 1994-95 series with emphatically driving English seamer Phil DeFreitas for four through backward point.
"It felt as if 'okay team we're off again we have got them already'," said Waugh, who would play all five matches in a 3-1 home win.

But what if the first ball is only that - a single among 10,000 or more beginning the series?
The wide Steve Harmison delivered to start 2006's Ashes - when he sent the delivery into the hands of skipper Andrew Flintoff in second slip, nearly missing the cut strip in the process - has become the most remembered Ashes series first ball of all.
"I panicked," Harmison told media soon afterwards.
"I allowed the enormity of the moment overwhelm me. It all seemed so alien for me. My whole body felt tense."
"I couldn't get my grip from being sweaty. That initial delivery flew out of my hands, the next did as well, and, following that, I had no rhythm, nothing."
The English had won the 2005 series fifteen before yet were comprehensively defeated 5-0. Many contend those series were lost at that exact moment.
